OVERVIEW

Trekking in the Sahara Desert of M’hamid El Ghizlane is highly recommended. The Sahara Desert is full of history and mystery that deserve to be explored on foot in the Nomadic way. The desert trekking is a walk (on foot) with a view of exploring the Nomadic culture, lifestyle, and custom. Accompanied by the local Nomadic team, consisting of a professional guide, camel drivers, cook, and camels, you start trekking from M’hamid El Ghizlane, the last village before you enter the authentic Sahara Desert. You head towards wild desert.

The camel drivers guide the camels carrying the luggage and personal belongings towards the desirable destination each day. During that period, you move according to the rhythm and intensity of the sun, follow the appropriate path Nomads follow, advance at your pace, and stop from time to time for rest. Basically, you travel in the way Nomads used to. Before leaving a campsite each day, the camel drivers gather the camels, collect wood for the fire. The cook, also, bakes the sandbread and prepares tea, lunch, and dinner. The professional guide, furthermore, provides you with pieces of information about the Sahara Desert at anytime.

You can sleep either under the stars or in the tents based on your preferences. The cook devotes his time to making you taste the Moroccan Local Cuisine. The period of walking each day is approximately 6 hours divided by the break for lunch.

From one stage to another, you ride the majestic dunes of the Moroccan Sahara Desert, admire the breathtaking views of both sunset and sunrise in the wild Sahara Desert, meet Nomads and camel shepherds, study the wells and plants, and immerse yourself in the authentic Sahara Desert atmosphere.

ITINERARY

Day 1: M’hamid
This trip starts from the village of M’hamid El Ghizlane, the gateway to the Authentic Sahara Desert, in the afternoon. Our Nomadic team welcome you to the Sahara desert camp where meals are prepared attentively and local music played traditionally. The Sahara desert camp includes facilities that help you get comfortable.
Day 2: M’hamid - Sidi Naji
Accompanied by the Nomadic team and the camel caravan, we go trekking in the authentic Sahara Desert after breakfast in the camp. We go deep in the Sahara desert where the landscape takes place from scattered dunes to tamarisk groves. After trekking in the Sahara Desert for a few hours, you will break for lunch and tea which will be served nicely in the shade of the tamarisk trees. After having a rest in the shade of wild Sahara Desert, you continue walking on foot towards Sidi Naji. Based on oral tradition, the marabout (Sidi Naji) lived there more than one century ago. It is postulated that this magnificent place is full of history and mystery as well as local custom. In the evening, the Nomadic team will make the mobile camp heart and soul while you enjoy the gorgeous sunset view. There, you will have traditional dinner, discover how Nomads used to live, and exchange songs and stories around the campfire.
Day 3: Sidi Naji - Erg Zahar
After taking breakfast in nature and once the mobile camp is packed up. You will leave the holy place towards the third biggest dune, Erg Zahar, in the Sahara desert of M’hamid El Ghizlane. Plateau and sand are clearly mixed on the way. Step by step, the trees disappear and the nature-made masterpiece appears. Erg Zahar is known as “the Screaming dune”. You will stop for lunch and tea in the shade of tamarisk trees. After a rest and drinking as much water as possible, you will continue trekking and exploring the authentic Sahara Desert. After a particular period of trekking, the nomadic team will make the camp while you ride the erg (dune) for the purpose of seeing the gorgeous sunset and the Algerian mountains. After that, dinner will be served including, for example, sandbread. Then, exchanging songs and stories takes place besides enjoying the sound of silence and sleeping under the stars or in the tents.
Day 4: Erg Zahar - Erg Smar
After delicious breakfast in Erg Zahar, you will cross, surprisingly, the bed of Drâa River to trek to the abandoned desert place in Erg Smar. Erg Smar was, in fact, considered as a farming land for Nomads for several centuries. It has been vouched for the fact that approximately up to 33 families lived and farmed there at a particular era noted for more than enough water in the wells. Camels, surprisingly, hurry their pace because they know that wells are on the way where you can have a golden chance to take a Nomadic refreshing shower. In this stunning place where it is hard to believe you are still in the heart of the Sahara Desert, having a special sand color different from the one in Erg Zahar, and under the shade of a big tamarisk tree, you will break for lunch. Then, we go trekking again until the sun sets and the Nomadic team unfold the mobile camp for the night in the beautiful place.
Day 5: Erg Smar - Erg Chegaga
After folding the mobile camp and loading the camels, time will be devoted to trekking towards the majestic dunes of Erg Chegaga, the highest dune (approximately 300m) in Morocco and the first destination for most travelers. While walking on foot, you will notice a variety of landscapes including green plants and the Bani mountain. Lunch will be taken under the shade of a Tamarisk tree as usual. After an enough rest, we resume the adventure in the afternoon. As you approach Erg Chegaga, the sand dunes become increasingly larger and more challenging to walk on Erg Chegaga is the authentic nature made-masterpiece surrounded by 15 km of dunes (300 m high) different in shape like the waves in the sea. In the evening, we will set the camp and enjoy the fabulous view from the top where you will smile from ear to ear. Being on the top of the dune makes you see people very small. With the panoramic view of the majestic dunes and shining stars, dinner will be served. After that, entertainment will take place immediately, exchanging songs and stories.
Day 6: Erg Chegaga - M’hamid
After exploring the highest majestic dunes of Erg Chegaga followed by a fabulous night under the shining stars, the mobile camp will be unfolded for the last time and the 4×4 vehicle be waiting to take you to the Nomadic Standard Camp (60 km of track). The 4×4 transportation crosses the sacred oasis track which is a natural source of water for shepherds to water their flocks. Lunch will be taken in the camp where you will have a well-deserved shower.
